How electric lighting developed
For thousands of years, people depended on fire for light after sunset. They used candles, oil lamps and burning pieces of wood. These sources of light were useful, but they produced smoke, gave little light and could easily cause fires.
During the nineteenth century, scientists and inventors began experimenting with electricity. Some early electric lamps produced light by creating a bright spark between two pieces of carbon. These arc lamps were powerful, but they were too bright and noisy for ordinary homes. They were mainly used in streets, factories and large public buildings.
Several inventors then tried to develop a smaller electric lamp suitable for houses. The main challenge was finding a material that could glow for a long time without burning immediately. The glowing part inside the lamp became known as the filament.
Thomas Edison is often described as the inventor of the electric light bulb, although other inventors also worked on similar designs. In 1879, Edison and his team produced a lamp that could continue shining for many hours. Edison also helped create a complete electrical system that included wires, switches and power stations.
Early electric lighting was expensive, so it was first installed mainly in wealthy homes, theatres, shops and important streets. As power stations became more common and equipment became cheaper, electricity gradually reached more homes and workplaces.
The first widely used bulbs contained filaments that became extremely hot. Much of their energy was changed into heat instead of visible light. Later lamps, including fluorescent lamps, were more efficient and lasted longer, although they also required special materials and equipment.
Modern LED lights use electronic components to produce light. They need much less electricity than traditional bulbs and can work for many thousands of hours. However, producing and disposing of any type of lamp still uses resources, so switching off unnecessary lights remains an important way to save energy.
A. Candles and oil lamps were dangerous because…
1) they needed electricity.
2) they could start fires.
3) they were too bright for homes.
4) they contained electronic parts.
B. Arc lamps were mainly used in large spaces because…
1) they produced strong light.
2) they were small and silent.
3) they used very little energy.
4) they could only work indoors.
C. A major difficulty in developing a household lamp was…
1) building the first theatre.
2) finding a suitable material for the filament.
3) making electricity more expensive.
4) removing all wires from the system.
D. Edison’s work was important because he…
1) invented candles and oil lamps.
2) worked without the help of a team.
3) created only a brighter arc lamp.
4) helped develop both a practical lamp and an electrical system.
E. Which sentence is TRUE?
1) Traditional bulbs changed all their energy into visible light.
2) LED lights usually use less electricity than traditional bulbs.
3) Electric lighting immediately appeared in every home.
4) Switching off lights does not help save energy.

Lucy: Hi Thomas. Have you seen the advertisement for the new show at the city planetarium?
Thomas: Yes, I noticed it online yesterday. Are you planning to go?
Lucy: Yes, on Saturday afternoon. Would you like to come with me?
Thomas: Certainly. Is the main programme about stars and constellations?
Lucy: There is a short presentation about constellations, but the main programme explains how scientists explore Mars using satellites and robotic vehicles.
Thomas: That sounds interesting. Where shall we meet?
Lucy: We could meet outside the main entrance.
Thomas: It may be crowded there. There is a large information screen inside the building. Let’s meet beside it.
Lucy: Good idea. The show begins at four o’clock. Shall we meet at half past three?
Thomas: I need to collect my camera from my cousin first. Could we meet fifteen minutes later?
Lucy: Of course. A quarter to four is fine.
Thomas: I planned to take the bus, but the road near the planetarium is closed. I’ll use the underground instead.
Lucy: That will probably be quicker. See you on Saturday!
Thomas: See you!
A — 2: was developed. Past Simple Passive.
B — 3: enough.
C — 4: more efficient. Слово than требует сравнительной степени прилагательного: more efficient than.
D — 2: are used. Present Simple Passive.
E — 3: have used. Present Perfect.
Hello Lucy,
Thank you for your email. I enjoy technology projects because they allow me to test ideas and work with my classmates. Last term, our group built a simple alarm that turned on when someone opened a door. I designed the circuit and wrote the instructions. In the future, I would like to study smart homes and create a model system that saves electricity by switching off lights automatically. It would be useful for many families.
Write back soon.
Best wishes,
Alex
