The history of the London Underground
Millions of people use underground trains every day, but the world’s first underground railway appeared more than 160 years ago. It opened in London in 1863 and connected several busy railway stations with the city centre.
During the nineteenth century, London grew rapidly. Its streets became crowded with horses, carriages and people. Travelling across the city was slow, so engineers began looking for a new form of transport that would reduce traffic above ground.
The first underground line was built using a method called cut and cover. Workers dug a deep trench along the street, built the railway inside it and then covered it again. This method caused serious disruption because roads had to remain closed during construction.
The earliest underground trains were pulled by steam engines. The tunnels were filled with smoke and steam, even though special openings were built to let fresh air enter. Passengers often complained about the dirty and uncomfortable conditions.
Later, engineers developed electric trains, which were cleaner and more suitable for underground travel. They also invented machines that could dig deeper tunnels without opening the streets above. These developments allowed the railway system to expand beneath more parts of London.
In 1908, the name Underground began appearing on station signs. The famous map of the system was designed by Harry Beck in the 1930s. Instead of showing the exact geographical position of every station, his map used simple coloured lines and made the connections easier to understand.
Today, the London Underground has hundreds of stations and carries millions of passengers. Londoners often call it the Tube because many of its tunnels have a round, tube-like shape. Although the system is old, it continues to play an important role in the life of the city.

- решение коммуникативной задачи — до 3 баллов;
- организация текста — до 2 баллов;
- лексико-грамматическое оформление — до 3 баллов;
- орфография и пунктуация — до 2 баллов.
Если объём письма составляет менее 72 слов, ответ оценивается в 0 баллов по всем критериям. Если в письме более 99 слов, проверяются только первые 90 слов.
Максимальный первичный балл за всю работу — 25.
