Sea otters
Sea otters are marine animals that live along the coasts of the northern Pacific Ocean. They can be found near Russia, Alaska, Canada and the western coast of the United States. Unlike many other sea animals, sea otters do not have a thick layer of fat under their skin.
To stay warm in cold water, sea otters have extremely thick fur. Their fur contains more hairs than the fur of almost any other animal. Otters spend a lot of time cleaning it because dirty fur cannot keep them warm properly.
Sea otters usually eat sea urchins, crabs, shellfish and small fish. They are one of the few animals that use tools. An otter may place a stone on its chest and hit a shell against it until the shell opens. Sometimes otters carry a favourite stone under a fold of skin near their front leg.
Sea otters often rest while floating on their backs. They may wrap themselves in sea plants so that the water does not carry them away. Mother otters also carry their babies on their chests and protect them from cold water.
In the past, people hunted sea otters for their valuable fur, and their numbers became very low. Today, hunting them is forbidden in many places. However, sea otters still face dangers such as polluted water, fishing nets and a lack of food.
Sea otters are important for the ocean environment. By eating sea urchins, they protect underwater forests of sea plants. These forests provide food and shelter for many other animals.

Система оценивания
В заданиях 1–3 за каждый правильно выбранный ответ начисляется 1 балл. Максимальный результат за каждое задание — 5 баллов.
Электронное письмо оценивается по четырём критериям:
- решение коммуникативной задачи — до 3 баллов;
- организация текста — до 2 баллов;
- лексико-грамматическое оформление — до 3 баллов;
- орфография и пунктуация — до 2 баллов.
Если объём письма составляет менее 54 слов, ответ оценивается в 0 баллов. Если в письме более 77 слов, проверяется только часть текста, соответствующая требуемому объёму.
Максимальный первичный балл за всю работу — 25.
