The history of pencils
Pencils are used by millions of people every day, but their history is more interesting than it may seem. The pencils we use today developed gradually over several centuries.
In the sixteenth century, a large amount of a dark material called graphite was discovered in England. People found that graphite could leave clear marks on paper and other surfaces. At first, pieces of graphite were simply held in the hand or wrapped in string.
Later, people began putting graphite into wooden holders. This made it cleaner and easier to use. Early wooden pencils were made by cutting a narrow space in a piece of wood, placing graphite inside and covering it with another piece of wood.
Graphite was quite valuable, and good-quality supplies were not available everywhere. During the eighteenth century, manufacturers began experimenting with mixtures of graphite and other materials.
At the end of the eighteenth century, a French inventor named Nicolas-Jacques Conté developed a method of mixing powdered graphite with clay. By changing the amount of clay, manufacturers could make pencils that produced harder or softer lines.
During the nineteenth century, machines made pencil production faster. Factories could cut wood, insert the graphite mixture and shape large numbers of pencils more efficiently. Pencils became cheaper and were widely used in schools and offices.
Today, pencils are made in many colours, shapes and levels of hardness. Some are designed for writing, while others are used by artists or engineers. Although pencils are simple objects, their ability to be erased and sharpened means they remain useful even in the digital age.

Текст для аудирования
Сейчас Вы будете выполнять задание по аудированию. Вы услышите запись дважды. После первого и второго прослушиваний у Вас будет время для выполнения и проверки задания.
Hello, Mum! It’s Oliver. I’m having a great weekend at Grandma and Grandpa’s house. My cousin Harry is staying here too, so we have been doing lots of things together.
Yesterday we visited the aviation museum outside the city. I had never been there before, although Harry had visited it with his father last summer. I especially liked the old planes and the exhibition about early pilots.
After the museum, we had lunch at a picnic area near the river. It was sunny when we arrived, but later it became cloudy and windy. We moved closer to some trees and finished our lunch there. I still enjoyed it.
We planned to go kayaking tomorrow morning, but Grandpa checked the weather forecast and there will be strong winds. Instead, we are going to visit an indoor sports centre and play table tennis.
Before I go home tomorrow evening, I want to visit a shop near the bus station. My cousin Lily has a birthday next week, and I want to buy her a small puzzle book.
I’ll see you tomorrow. Bye!
