Task 1. Listening transcript (long version)

Girl: Hi Alex, have you decided where you want to spend the summer holidays?
Boy: Yes, I’d love to go to the mountains this year. Fresh air, beautiful views, hiking—it sounds amazing.
Girl: Really? I still prefer the seaside. I can’t imagine summer without swimming and sunbathing.
Boy: The sea is nice, but don’t you think it gets too crowded in July?
Girl: That’s true, but I don’t mind. I enjoy being around people on the beach.
Boy: I prefer quiet places. And besides, seaside hotels are very expensive now.
Girl: That’s a problem. Still, holidays are always fun. Summer is my favourite time of year.
Boy: I agree. Whatever we choose, it will be better with friends.
Girl: Absolutely! After the trip, let’s prepare something for school.

Task 7. Writing — sample answer

Hello Emma,
Thanks for your letter. I like reading a lot, too. At home I usually read adventure and fantasy books in Russian, because it is easier for me to relax. But sometimes I try short books in English. It helps me learn new words and understand the language better. I think reading in English is useful because it improves vocabulary. Recently I finished a detective story, and it was very exciting. Reading is one of my favourite hobbies, and I try to spend at least half an hour a day on it.
What novel are you reading at school? Is it an old or modern book? Who is your favourite character in it?
Write soon!
Best wishes,
Your friend
