Lucas Explores the Deep Sea

Lucas had always been fascinated by the ocean, but he had never imagined he would get the opportunity to explore it so closely. His uncle, a marine biologist, invited him to join a research expedition to study marine life.

As soon as they boarded the research ship, Lucas realized how different life at sea was. The crew had a strict routine, and each person had a specific role. He helped collect water samples, analyze microscopic sea creatures, and take photographs of rare fish.

The most exciting part of the trip was when Lucas got to ride in a small submarine. He watched in amazement as they descended into the deep ocean, where strange and colorful creatures swam around them. He saw glowing jellyfish, huge squid, and even a shark swimming silently past their window.

After a week on the research ship, Lucas returned home with a new appreciation for marine science. He realized that exploring the ocean was not just about adventure but also about protecting the environment and learning more about the mysteries of the deep sea.

A. Why was Lucas invited on the expedition?

  1. His uncle was a marine biologist.
  2. He was an experienced deep-sea diver.
  3. He had won a science competition.
  4. He wanted to become a fisherman.

B. What was Lucas’s role on the ship?

  1. He helped prepare food for the crew.
  2. He assisted in collecting scientific data.
  3. He navigated the submarine.
  4. He wrote reports on ocean pollution.

C. What amazed Lucas the most during the trip?

  1. The size of the research ship.
  2. The glowing creatures in the deep sea.
  3. The food served on the ship.
  4. The number of people working on board.

D. What did Lucas learn from his experience?

  1. That deep-sea exploration was too dangerous.
  2. That working on a ship was boring.
  3. That studying the ocean helped protect the environment.
  4. That he preferred staying on land.

Запишите в таблицу выбранные цифры под соответствующими буквами.

One of the most ______ (B. EXCITE) parts of the program was visiting the planetarium. We saw a simulation of the night sky and learned about different constellations.

Our teacher also invited a guest speaker, a scientist who works at a space agency. He told us about the ______ (C. DANGER) of space travel and how astronauts prepare for their missions.

I was especially interested in the section about Mars exploration. Scientists believe that it may be ______ (D. POSSIBLE) to build a base on Mars in the future.

Task 1 – Listening

Listening Script:

«Welcome to the new science center, a place where visitors can explore the wonders of science and technology! The center is located next to the train station, making it easy to access.

We offer a variety of exhibits and activities. One of the most popular is our science exhibitions, which are free for all students. We also have planetarium shows and robotics workshops for those interested in space and engineering.

We organize public lectures twice a month, where scientists present the latest discoveries. If you get hungry, you can visit our cafeteria, which serves healthy snacks. On Sundays, we close at 5 PM.

However, unlike other science centers, we do not have a swimming pool, but we hope to add an underwater exploration exhibit soon!»

Hi Alex,

Thanks for your email! Learning to code is a great skill. I use technology every day for studying, chatting with friends, and playing games. My phone and laptop are the devices I use the most.

I think the most important technology today is artificial intelligence. It helps in many fields, like medicine, education, and transportation.

In the future, I believe technology will become even smarter. Maybe we will have robots in every home or flying cars! What programming language are you learning? Looking forward to your reply!

Best,
