Penguins

Penguins are unusual birds because they cannot fly, but they are excellent swimmers. Penguins live in the Southern Hemisphere, mostly in Antarctica and nearby islands.

These birds spend most of their lives in the water. They use their wings like flippers to swim very quickly. Penguins mainly eat fish, squid and small sea animals.

Penguins live in large colonies. Sometimes thousands of penguins live together in one place. Living in big groups helps them stay safe from predators.

Penguins also take great care of their eggs. In many penguin species the father keeps the egg warm while the mother goes to the sea to find food.

Penguins are well adapted to cold weather. Their thick feathers and fat help them survive in very low temperatures.
