The Story of Chocolate

Chocolate is one of the most popular sweets in the world. However, it was not always eaten as a sweet food.

Many centuries ago the ancient Maya and Aztec people in Central America prepared a drink from cocoa beans. This drink was very bitter and different from the chocolate we know today.

When cocoa beans were brought to Europe in the sixteenth century, people started adding sugar and milk to make the drink sweeter.

In the nineteenth century new technologies helped produce solid chocolate. This made chocolate easier to sell and transport.

Today chocolate is produced in many countries and millions of people enjoy it every day.
