The First Bicycle

The first bicycles were very different from the ones we use today. In the early nineteenth century people wanted a faster way to travel without using horses.

In 1817 a German inventor named Karl Drais created a simple two-wheeled machine. People had to push it with their feet on the ground to move forward. It did not have pedals.

Later inventors improved the design. In the 1860s bicycles with pedals appeared. They became very popular in Europe and America.

However, early bicycles were not always safe. Some of them had very large front wheels, which made riding difficult and sometimes dangerous.

Modern bicycles are much safer and more comfortable. Today millions of people use bicycles for sport, travel, and everyday transport.
