Установите соответствие между текстами A – G и заголовками 1 – 8.Занесите свои ответы в таблицу. Используйте каждую цифру только один раз.В задании один заголовок лишний.1.The House of Commons2.Parliamentary Procedure3.The House of Lords4.Westminster5.The System of Government6.Parliamentary Committees7.Whitehall8.The CrownA. Her Majesty’s Government, in spite of its name, derives its authority andpower from its party representation in Parliament. Parliament is housed in thePalace of Westminster, once a home of the monarchy. Like the monarchy,Parliament is an ancient institution, dating from the middle of the thirteenthcentury. Parliament is the seat of British democracy, but it is perhaps valuable toremember that while the House of Lords was created in order to provide acouncil of the nobility for the king, the Commons were summoned originally inorder to provide the king with money.B. The reigning monarch is not only head of state but symbol of the unity of thenation. The monarchy is Britain’s oldest secular institution, its continuity forover a thousand years broken only once by a republic that lasted a mere elevenyears (1649-60). The monarchy is hereditary, the succession passingautomatically to the oldest male child, or in the absence of males to the oldestfemale offspring of the monarch. In law the monarch is head of the executive andof the judiciary, head of the Church of England, and commander-in-chief of thearmed forces.C. The dynamic power of Parliament lies in its lower chamber. Of its 650members, 523 represent constituencies in England, 38 in Wales, 72 in Scotlandand 17 in Northern Ireland. There are only seats in the Commons debating chamber for 370 members, but except on matters of great interest, it is unusual for all members to be present at any one time. Many MPs find themselves inother rooms of the Commons, participating in a variety of committees and meetings necessary for an effective parliamentary process.D. Britain is a democracy, yet its people are not, as one might expect in ademocracy, constitutionally in control of the state. The constitutional situation isan apparently contradictory one. As a result of a historical process the people ofBritain are subjects of the Crown, accepting the Queen as the head of the state.Yet even the Queen is not sovereign in any substantial sense since she receivesher authority from Parliament, and is subject to its direction in almost all matters. This curious situation came about as a result of a long struggle for powerbetween the Crown and Parliament during the sixteenth and the seventeenthcenturies.E. Her Majesty’s Government governs in the name of the Queen, and its hub,Downing Street, lies in Whitehall, a short walk from Parliament. Following ageneral election, the Queen invites the leader of the majority party represented inthe Commons, to form a government on her behalf. Government ministers areinvariably members of the House of Commons, but infrequently members of theHouse of Lords are appointed. All government members continue to represent“constituencies” which elected them.F. Each parliamentary session begins with the “State Opening of Parliament”, aceremonial occasion in which the Queen proceeds from Buckingham Palace tothe Palace of Westminster where she delivers the Queen’s Speech from herthrone in the House of Lords. Her speech is drafted by her government, anddescribes what the government intends to implement during the forthcomingsession. Leading members of the Commons may hear the speech from the far endof the chamber, but are not allowed to enter the House of Lords.G.The upper chamber of Parliament is not democratic in any sense at all. Itconsists of four categories of peer. The majority are hereditary peers, a total ofalmost 800, but of whom only about half take an active interest in the affairs ofthe state. A smaller number, between 350 and 400, are “life” peers–an ideaintroduced in 1958 to elevate to the peerage certain people who renderedpolitical or public service to the nation. Three man in a boat
We roamed about sweet Sonning for an hour or so, and then, it being too late to push on past Reading, we decided to go back to one of the Shiplake islands, and put up there for the night. It was still early when we got settled, and George said that, as we had plenty of time, it would be a splendid opportunity to try a good, slap-up supper. He said he would show us what could be done up the river in the way of cooking, and suggested that, with the vegetables and the remains of the cold beef and general odds and ends, we should make an Irish stew.It seemeda fascinating idea. George gathered wood and made a fire, and Harris and I started to peel the potatoes. I should never have thought that peeling potatoes was such an undertaking. The job turned out to be the biggest thing of its kind that I had ever beenin. We began cheerfully, one might almost say skittishly, but our light-heartedness was gone by the time the first potato was finished. The more we peeled, the more peel there seemed to be left on; by the time we had got all the peel off and all the eyes out, there was no potato left –at least none worth speaking of. George came and had a look at it –it was about the size of a pea-nut. He said:“Oh, that won’t do! You’re wasting them. You must scrape them.”So we scraped them, and that was harder work than peeling. They are such an extraordinary shape, potatoes –all bumps and warts and hollows. We worked steadily for five-and-twenty minutes, and did four potatoes. Then we struck. We said we should require the rest of the evening for scraping ourselves.Inever saw such a thing as potato-scraping for making a fellow in a mess. It seemed difficult to believe that the potato-scrapings in which Harris and I stood, half smothered, could have come off four potatoes. It shows you what can be done with economy and care.George said it was absurd to have only four potatoes in an Irish stew, so we washed half-a-dozen or so more, and put them in without peeling. We also put in a cabbage and about half a peck of peas. George stirred it all up, and then he said that there seemed to be a lot of room to spare, so we overhauled both the hampers, and picked out all the odds and ends and the remnants, and added them to the stew. There were half a pork pie and a bit of cold boiled bacon left, and we put them in. Then George found half a tin of potted salmon, and he emptied that into the pot.He said that was the advantage of Irish stew: you got rid of such a lot of things. I fished out a couple of eggs that had got cracked, and put those in. George said they would thicken the gravy.I forget the other ingredients, but I know nothing was wasted; and I remember that, towards the end, Montmorency, who had evinced great interest in the proceedings throughout, strolled away with an earnest and thoughtful air, reappearing, a few minutes afterwards, with a dead water-rat in his mouth, which he evidently wished to present as his contribution to the dinner; whether in a sarcastic spirit, or with a genuine desire to assist, I cannot say.We had a discussion as to whether the rat should go in or not. Harris said that he thought it would be all right, mixed up with the other things, and that every little helped; but George stood up for precedent. He said he had never heard of water-rats in Irish stew, and he would rather be on the safe side, and not try experiments.Harris said:“If you never try a new thing, how can you tell what it’s like? It’s men such as you that hamper the world’s progress. Think of the man who first tried German sausage!”It was a great success, that Irish stew. I don’t think I ever enjoyed a meal more. There was something so fresh and piquant about it. One’s palate gets so tired of the old hackneyed things: here was a dish with a new flavour, with a taste like nothing else on earth. And it was nourishing, too. As George said, there was good stuff in it. The peas and potatoes might have been a bit softer, but we all had good teeth, so that did not matter much: and as for the gravy, it was a poem –a little too rich, perhaps, for a weak stomach, but nutritious.A. What wasGeorge’s suggestion?

2)gathering wood
3)cooking an Irish stew
4)making a fireB. What was the most difficult thing about potatoes?1)peeling them2)scraping them3)washing them4)finding themC. What does » stir up» mean ( paragraph 5) ?

Why did Montmorency bring a dead water-rat?1)He wanted to contribute to the dinner.2)It was done in a sarcastic way.3)It was general desire to assist.4) No right answers.F. «Hamper» in paragraph 9 means…1)to improve2)to accomplish3)to stop4)to developG.
